Los Gaminos

Fortnight 1978, Feature film, 1h50

« Los Gaminos », who are they ? Children who have broken all ties with the family unit, a unit which has burst due to the atmosphere of aggression in the shanty-towns. These children, regrouped in a gang, try to survive in the streets of Bogota through begging, stealing and prostitution. For me, they are the essential expression of the contradictions, the fondamental problems which face Colombia and, even more, all the Latin American communities. Getting closer, and not without difficulty, to the painful problems of these abandoned children, was a very enriching experience, which allowed me to have a concrete and fruitful contact with the complexity of Latin American reality which I try to express through cinema.
