Synopsis

« I Vecchi e I Giovani » is the story of a fight of generations who measure the importance of their ideals, of their battles, of their defeats, with as a backgroung an Italy which beyond the appearances, does not change at all. « I Vecchi e I Giovani » is moreover the story of a family, the Laurentanos, living in the complexity of family relationships, all the ambiguities, all the contradictions all the contrasts, the disturbances of the times. Through a destiny, which seems to confine perfectly in a closed plot the past and the future of the family, we realize the meaning of life, which, although changing, is always presenting the same basic problems. « I Vecchi e I Giovani » is also the trial of a political class of the past which could also be that of today – which brought about the unity of Italyand which succeeding in expressing the ideals of people determined to recognize themselves as a nation, at the cost of day by day bargaining. « I Vecchi e I Giovani » is finally the story of a generation of youths who yesterday like today, can only get out of their own rebellion against the old logic of thing through violence, death, exile and madness. Director

Marco Leto

Born in Rome in 1931, he studied law et Rome Universoy, then cinema at the Experimental Center of Cinematography. Film club organizer, then journalist (critic at « Il Globo » from 1955 to 1961) and essayist, he became directors’ assistant for Franco Rossi, Mario Monicelli, Florestano Vancini, Renato Castellani… Starting 1963, he directed historic and political films for television, like « La Sconfitta di Trotsky » (1967), « Dal Gran Consiglio al Processo di Verona » (1969), « Opla, Noi Viviamo!, di Toller » (1970), « Donnarumma All’Assalto » (1971). After directing his first cinema long feature in 1973, « La Villeggiatura », he got in 1975 the Best Director for a TV adaptation award for « Rosso Veniziano » (from P.M. Pasinetti’s novel) and « Gli Strumente del Potere ». « I Vecchi e i Giovani » is his third cinema long feature.
