He was born in Ukraine and studied photography at the cinema school of Moscou, the VGIK. He worked for the Yalta studios and got back to Ukraine. He worked as a director of photography with Serguei Paradjanov. He made his first full length film in 1965 and a second one in 1968. These two movies were censored. His feature film L’oiseau blanc à tache noire released in the Soviet Union. He made 7 more films. He is one of the most important directors of Dovzenko studios in Ukraine.
