Born in Tbilissi in 1934, he gets into the WGIK, cinema school of Moscow, after math studies. Back in Tbilissi, he works at the Gruzia Films Studios and directs several short films between 1964 and 1966, and his first long feature in 1969, « Giorgobistve ».
