Born in 1942 in Flushing, New York from parents of Sicilian descent, he grew up in NY’s Little Italy which inspired him a lot in his films. Intending at first to live a religious life, he goes to the seminary in 1956, but, expelled a year later, he goes to New York University in 1960 where he attends cinema courses. Professor in this same university fron 1968 to 1970, he already directed his first short films and directs his first long feature in 1969, « Who’s that knocking at my door? », while working that same year as assistant director and editor on « Woodstock ».
