Born in Santanderen, he studied cinema and was a teacher. He participated in the writing of two films by Carlos Saura and started directing; he became one of the most important leader of spanish cinema in the 60’s. His films most famous are La Colmena, awarded in Berlin and Les Saints Innocents, awarded in Cannes. He also directed television films and is still working as a screenwriter.
