She was born in Stockholm but grew up in Kristinehamn and then moved back to Stockholm. She attended the Stockholm University College of Arts, Crafts and Design and later Beckmans College of Design. She moved to the USA and began using the film camera as an artistic tool early in her career, and following her debut film, Schmeerguntz in 1966, she became one of the key figures in the avant-garde film movement that emerged in California in the 1960s. She held a professorship at the San Francisco Art Institute when she returned to Sweden. She settled in Kristinehamn. She has resumed making films, with digital video as her new medium.
