Born in Ratnapura (Sri Lanka) in 1977, Vimukthi Jayasundara studied at the Film and Television Institute of India (F.T.T.I.) from 1998 to 2001. He was a student at the Fresnoy national studio of contemporary arts, then resident of the Cinéfondation at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003.
