The Fortnight in the Bocca's district

The Directors' Fortnight initiated this project with the support of BNP Paribas, ACSE, the city of Cannes and Cannes Cinéma.

The fortnight in the Bocca's district  project aims to try out an original dynamic in cultural activism aimed at an outlying quarter of Cannes that is part of a wider policy of democratization and access to culture. Linked with the Directors’ Fortnight, it aims to extend the reach of the event to the district of la Bocca.

During the festival, as part of Cannes Cinéphiles, part of the program is screened in two neighborhood cinemas of La Bocca: the Licorne and the Raimu. Admission is free, open to all and include Q&As with directors. There are also image education workshops with vocational centers and local associations.

Throughout the year, the Quinzaine at La Bocca organizes previews and screenings of Fortnight selections in general release. As part of this programming, the Fortnight pursues its pedagogical mission and sets up screenwriting workshops in local vocational centers.

By decentralizing Cannes screenings in this fringe neighborhood of  the Cannes Festival, we hope to help citizens of La Bocca, often excluded from the festivities, discover and transmit a taste for demanding, audacious and singular filmmaking.

This outreach project consists of screening films from the Directors’ Fortnight in two local cinemas (the Licorne and the Raimu) for the kinds of audiences that are often excluded from the festivities. So these audiences are not only given access to screenings but also an opportunity to meet Fortnight filmmakers and take part in screen education workshops. It is a matter of familiarizing such audiences with challenging cinematic forms, encouraging their appreciation of the films, and getting them more involved throughout the year in following the films.
