He was born in Italy. In 1983, his first short films had a great success in international festivals. In 1984, he founded his production company Monogatari. In 1986, he directed Voci celate, the begginning of his documentary work. In 1990, he made his first feature film L'Aria serena dell'ovest. Un'anima divisa in due was in competition in Venice and was awarded.
