Born in May 1923, Mrinal Sen was reader and copy editor, independant journalist and medical supply salesman - without knowing anything of medecine - before directing his first feature film in 1956, and being convinced right away that it wasn't his calling. He directed another long feature in 1959 which was a success. He continued directing regularly after that, and still is controversial. He wrote for several years about cinema and its aesthetics.
