After graduating in architecture in Brasilia, Karim Aïnouz completed a degree in cinema studies at NYU. From 1990 onwards he directs shorts and documentaries and installations. He also worked as an assistant director for Poison from Todd Haynes, 1992 and screenwriter on Behind the Sun from Walter Salles, 2002. The Silver Cliff is his fourth film.
