Feature film / U.S.A. / 1h30 / 35mm / couleur / 1.85 / Dolby stéréo / Directors' Fortnight 1987

My work is a combination of film, music, electronics, storytelling, dancing, social commetary, impersonation, animation and anything else I come with... When I decided to do that movie, I began looking for a direcor. I asked a lot of people for suggestions and talked to directors whose concert films I admire : Martin Scorsese (The Last Waltz) and Jonathan Demme (Stop Making Sense). They both said : "Do it yourself. Take a good director of photography and a loud assistant director". I took their advice and I was not sorry until about a month into the edit I saw my face on the screen (for the hundredth time that morning) and thought: if I ever see that face again, I am going to go crazy... Even though I design the performances to be split-second collaboration betweeen sound, image and action, it is the presence and inventiveness of performers that bring the work to life... Performance Art disappears. At first, I wanted to film Home of the Brave to save it. In the process, I learned that I love make movies. Laurie Anderson
