Directors' Fortnight 2009

The Directors' Fortnight presented 24 features and 12 shorts. In addition, the Fortnight included a screening of Hotaru to accompany the SRF presentation of the Carrosse d'Or award to the Japanese director Naomi Kawase.

France was represented by Les beaux gosses, first film by well-known comic strip artist Riad Sattouf, and Le Roi de l'évasion, which marked Alain Guiraudie's acclaimed return to the Fortnight. The veteran of the French selection was Luc Moullet (Les Contrebandières in 69) happy to return 40 years later with a hilarious, ferocious documentary, Land of Madness.

Under-represented in previous years, the United States enjoyed a major comeback with four films. A year after Pleasure of Being Robbed (The), Josh Safdie were back with Go Get Some Rosemary.
Quebec was in the spotlight with no less than three films, Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique, Denis Côté's third film Carcasses and Xavier Dolan's first feature, J'ai tué ma mère.

The Fortnight lived through historic hours by welcoming Francis Ford Coppola and his most recent film Tetro surrounded by his actors Vincent Gallo, Alden Ehrenreich and Maribel Verdú.

Latin America had less representation than the year before, with a first and second feature. But Asia had a strong presence with Hong Sangsoo's new masterpiece Like You Know It All (Jal Aljido Motamyunseo) and films by outstanding young talents such as Tzu Nyen HO's HERE (Singapore), Chan Fui (Chris) Chong's Karaoke (Malaysia) and Liu Jia Yin's Oxhide II.

From Europe, we had confirmation of a new wind from Bulgaria, Austria and Belgium in particular.
