The Directors Fortnight screened 21 features, 14 shorts and two special events. In addition to the Fortnight screenings two films were presented by the SRF: Claire Simon's Est-ce qu'on a gagné ou est-ce qu'on a perdu ? and Ousmane Sembene's Xala (1975), the Senegalese director who received the SRF's Carrosse d'Or Award.
The Fortnight held special screenings of Sam Peckinpah's great western, Ride The High Country and Valerio Zurlini's exceptional Cronaca familiare - two affecting cinephile highlights of the festival.
The opening film, Eric Khoo's Be With Me, moved first night audiences and remained one of the festival's major surprises. In the following days, the Fortnight scored again with Lodge Kerrigan's powerful third film, Keane. Other Fortnight highlights included Bent Hamer's Factotum, starring Matt Dillon and Lily Taylor, Mohammad Rasoulof's Jazireh Ahani (Iron Island, closing film), João Pedro Rodrigues's Odete (Portugal), Kim Longinotto and Florence Ayisi's Sisters In Law (a fabulous documentary about women judges in Cameroun), Greg McLean's Wolf Creek (an Australian horror film which enjoyed a sizeable turnout of genre fans).
The four French selections provided a good reflection of the ambition and diversity of local auteur films.
