In 2002, the Directors' Fortnight selection included 22 feature films ­ six of them first films ­ and 12 shorts, six French and six foreign.

The Fortnight also held its first midnight screening: a compendium of short, silent erotic films called Polissons et Galipettes.

The Fortnight also paid tribute to Italian actor, stage and film director Carmelo Bene with a screening of his posthumous work, Otello. Bene, who attended the Fortnight on several occasions, died in March 2002.

For the third consecutive year, En avant!, a program of experimental films by visual artists, included six films.

In all, the 34th Directors' Fortnight showcased 42 films, features and shorts combined. 26 were screened in their world premieres, 12 in their international premieres.
